Canadiens Acquire Forward Alex Newhook from Avalanche in Trade
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

In a confirmed move announced by the Montreal Canadiens’ official team site, the organization has obtained the rights to forward Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche. The trade sees Montreal sending their 31st (previously acquired from Florida) and 37th overall picks in the 2023 NHL Draft, along with defenseman Gianni Fairbrother, to Colorado in exchange for Newhook.

Newhook is a pending RFA and the Canadiens will look to immediately sign him to a new contract.

The Avalanche have decided to part ways with the 22-year-old forward in exchange for the first and second-round picks, including the 31st and 37th overall selections. Newhook, who displayed promising performances last season, recorded 14 goals and 16 assists in 82 games with the Avalanche. He also contributed one assist in seven playoff games. His production rate at 5v5 has been decent but he wasn’t able to establish himself higher in the Avs’ lineup.

Since being drafted by the Avalanche in the first round (16th overall) in 2019, the native of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, has amassed 27 goals and 39 assists in 159 career games with the team. Notably, Newhook played a key role in helping the Avalanche capture the Stanley Cup in 2022, registering four assists in 12 playoff games.

At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, Newhook possesses the qualities of a skilled and agile centerman. As a young forward with tremendous potential, he is expected to bolster Montreal’s middle-six forward group in the upcoming season. With room for further growth and development, the Canadiens hope Newhook can reach his full potential under the guidance of coaches such as MSL (Martin St. Louis) and Adam Nicholas.

The trade signifies a significant move for both teams, with the Canadiens acquiring a promising young talent in Newhook, while the Avalanche secure additional draft assets to strengthen their roster moving forward.
